Have the refrigerant discharged and recovered by an air conditioning technician, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, remove the A/C compressor drivebelt, on 2002 and earlier Legacy models and 2001 and earlier For-ester models, remove the electrical harness from the alternator, on2003 and later Legacy models and 2002 and later Forester models remove the alternator, disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor, plug the open fittings immediately to prevent entry of dirt and moisture, disconnect the air conditioning compressor clutch electrical connector, remove the compressor mounting bolts attaching the compressor to the brackets and then remove the compressor, if a new compressor is being installed, follow the accompanying directions on draining the excess oil from it prior to installation, the clutch may have to be transferred from the old compressor to the new unit, installation is the reverse of removal, use new 0-rings (lightly coated with fresh refrigerant oil) at the line fittings, tighten the compressor mounting bolts and line fittings to the torque, only use O-rings that are designed specifically for A/C system applications, reconnect the battery, have the system evacuated, recharged and leak tested by an air conditioning technician.
