Subaru Outback Ball Joint

The Subaru Outback Ball Joint is a suspension component that connects the control arm and steering knuckle. It allows for up and down motion of the wheel assembly while the car turns left or right. The Ball Joint assembly consists of a steel ball stud inside a socket. The socket is covered with a rubber boot that keeps dirt out and retains lubricant. The design of the Ball Joint allows the knuckle to rotate horizontally for steering while the control arm travels vertically over bumps. This helps the Subaru suspension remain aligned and responsive. It is common to call a Ball Joint upper or lower depending on its mounting point and also load bearing when it supports vehicle weight and follower when it predominantly maintains alignment without taking load. The proper functioning of a Subaru is necessary for a smooth ride and it helps to keep the Outback tires tracking true. When well maintained, a Ball Joint will wear slowly over time. In case any boots are damaged or loss of lubrication happens, you will hear noise coming from it, uneven tire wear, misalignment or pull in the steering. This indicates what kind of replacement the Subaru Outback may need.

Subaru Outback Ball Joint Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Inspect and Replace a Control Arm Ball Joint on Subaru Outback?
    A:
Inspect the Control Arm ball joints for looseness anytime either of them is separated from the control arm, and if the ball joint is loose or the ball stud can be turned, replace the ball joint. Raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, wipe each ball joint clean and inspect the seal for cuts and tears, then place a large prybar under the ball joint and resting on the wheel and try to pry the ball joint up and down while feeling for movement between the ball joint and Steering Knuckle. Have an assistant grasp the tire at the top and bottom and move the top of the tire in and out to check for looseness in the ball joint stud castellated nut. To replace the ball joint, loosen the front wheel lug nuts, remove the cotter pin and loosen the castle nut on the ball stud, separate the control arm from the ball joint, remove the ball joint pinch bolt from the steering knuckle, install the ball joint into the knuckle and tighten the pinch bolt, reattach the control arm to the ball joint and tighten the castle nut, install a new cotter pin, install the wheels and lower the vehicle, and tighten the wheel lug nuts.
