Subaru Outback Trunk Lock Cylinder

The Trunk Lock Cylinder of the Subaru Outback ensures the equipment inside the spacious trunk remains protected. The tailgate latch houses the Trunk Lock Cylinder, which locks the tailgate. When the correct key is inserted into the cylinder, its tumblers, which are cut into ridges, will match the key. This allows the core to rotate. The rotation pulls a cam that drives the catch bar into a fixed slot. This prevents the door from lifting. The reverse turn pulls the bar back again, which opens the hatch for spare tires, tools, or other bulky cargo. Subaru wagons from older generations utilized a simple single-cut metal key Trunk Lock Cylinder. Many of the Outback editions that came after introduced side-cut keys to enhance security, making picking more difficult. Regardless, both utilize the same mechanical twist-to-lock mechanism, thus proving the Trunk Lock Cylinder concept timeless. The primary difference is in the shape of the keys and the more refined machining of the tumbler. However, the function isn't any different. Consequently, Subaru owners will find this action familiar across various model years. The Trunk Lock Cylinder is durable, compact, and cleverly concealed behind the exterior handle, giving every Outback user the essential confidence that their loaded gear will remain inside.

Subaru Outback Trunk Lock Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to remove and reinstall the Trunk Lid Latch and Trunk Lock Cylinder on a Subaru Outback?
    Posted by Michelle K.
    A:
On 2008 and later models, the trunk lid actuator is fitted with a latch, no outside lock included. To open the trunk on 2007 and earlier models, remove any trunk lid trim panels surrounding the latch. Scribe or paint around latch assembly to ensure alignment when installing again. Dismount lock cylinder to latch rod. Remove two latch fasteners and pull out latch. Reverse above step to reinstall but ensure mark made before removing aligns it in place of latch. In case of 2008 and later models, open trunk then take away any trunk lid trim panels surrounding its latch. Scribe or paint around a lock assembly for correct placement during reinstallation. Two fasteners hold down the tailgate lid's catch bolt down this two bolts then unplug electrical connector and cable from page of rear side. Do away with that block hinged rear end part thereof; after which reset this to position by reversing steps as outlined above while matching mark put before pickup was lifted out but still at location of closure mechanism. For the trunk lock cylinder on 2007 and earlier models open the trunk and remove the trunk lid trim panels. Detach the latch to lock cylinder rod from the lock cylinder, then use a pair of pliers to remove the lock cylinder retaining clip. Grasp with both hands on outside of back cover hold squeeze lightly push towards side seam until fully withdraws through such apertures at top hand raised gently towards left thus pulling loosen forceps pressure off so that they slide along inner edges sides inwardly lower third downwards another until reach first lobe about it looks like coming out just slightly bit more than line drawn across release suddenly almost touching one another's point starting place disappears completely under similar hole again ending at beginning where from here into cannot be seen otherwise will not fit properly anymore except if they are purposely inserted behind still remained intact all times being rigidly clamped together all round as though there were never any other object within sight shall thus hold onto its place. To reinstall, reverse the steps.
