    Q:
How to Replace the Ignition Lock Cylinder and Ignition Switch on a Subaru Legacy? Posted by Customer
    A:
Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Remove the instrument panel lower cover, the upper and lower steering column covers, and the instrument cluster trim panel. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector by depressing the release tab and pulling the two halves apart, ensuring the correct connector is unplugged. If equipped, remove the plate underneath the steering column assembly by taking out the fasteners and the ignition switch retaining screw, then pull the switch out of the Ignition Lock Cylinder housing. For models with a tilt steering column, move the tilt lever down far enough to clear the ignition switch. If replacing the ignition switch, remove the switch retaining screw and take out the switch; if not replacing it, removal is unnecessary for Ignition Lock Cylinder access. To replace the Ignition Lock Cylinder, use a hammer and punch to unscrew the two breakaway bolts by knocking them counterclockwise, then remove the upper clamp and detach the Ignition Lock Cylinder/ignition switch assembly from the steering column by pulling it straight down. If the bolts cannot be unscrewed, drill a hole in the center of each bolt and use a screw extractor, or drill out the entire bolt head with a larger bit. Remove the ignition switch and Ignition Lock Cylinder assembly, and if replacing the Ignition Lock Cylinder, take the ignition switch out of the assembly. Installation follows the reverse order of removal, tightening the lock cylinder bolts until their heads twist off.

    Q:
What should you do if you're just replacing the ignition switch for the 2001 Subaru Forester? Posted by Customer
    A:
If you're just replacing the ignition switch, remove the switch retaining screw and remove the switch. If you're not replacing the ignition switch, it's not necessary to remove it now to remove the key lock cylinder.

Is a new key needed if I use this to replace the original lock cylinder? Or will I be able to use my current keys? Posted by Customer: 2001 Subaru Forester
    A:
83139FC001 is just the electrical switch. 83121FC060 would be the new ignition cylinder - it includes 2 new keys to use with it.
