The Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system reduces hydrocarbon emissions by circulating fresh air from the air filter housing through a series of hoses into the crankcase, where the fresh air mixes with blow-by gases before being drawn from the crankcase by intake vacuum, through the PCV valve and then into the intake manifold. During idle and part-throttle conditions, intake manifold vacuum is high and blow-by gases and crankcase vapors flow from the crankcase into the intake manifold through the PCV valve and the crankcase ventilation hose (also known as the PCV hose) into the intake manifold. During wide-open throttle conditions, intake manifold vacuum is not high enough to pull fresh air into the crankcase or to pull blow-by gases or crankcase vapors out of the crankcase, instead, other hoses allow some of the blow-by gases and crankcase vapors to flow out of the crankcase and into the air intake duct or air filter housing, from which they're pulled into the intake manifold along with intake air. To replace the fresh air inlet hoses, loosen the hose clamps and pull off the hose at each end, inspect the hoses for cracks, tears and deterioration, if either hose is damaged or worn, replace it and installation is the reverse of removal.
