Drain the cooling system, disconnect the radiator hose and the bypass hose(s) from the water pump, remove both cooling fans from the radiator, remove the drivebelt cover and drive belts, remove the timing belt, remove the timing belt tensioner and the idler pulley located below the water pump, remove the sprocket from the left side camshaft, remove the left side rear timing belt cover, remove the mounting bracket for the belt tensioner, remove the camshaft position sensor, remove the sprockets from the left side camshafts, loosen the bolts to the water pump, then separate the water pump and gasket from the engine, remove all traces of the old gasket material from the engine mounting surface and clean it thoroughly, compare the new pump to the old one to make sure they're identical, coat both sides of a new gasket with gasket sealant and then install the gasket onto the pump, apply a small amount of RTV sealant to the threads of each mounting bolt, carefully move the water pump into position while keeping the gasket in place, install the mounting bolts finger tight making certain that the water pump and gasket are aligned correctly on the engine, tighten the bolts to the torque, refill the cooling system and check the drivebelt tension.

A failure in the water pump can cause serious engine damage due to overheating and must be replaced with a new or rebuilt unit. The two most common signs of water pump failure are coolant leakage and/or a howling or screeching sound, which should not be mistaken for drivebelt slippage, which causes a squealing sound. The water pump is located at the front of the engine and if a puddle of coolant is noticed under the front of the vehicle, emanating from the timing belt cover, chances are that the water pump seal has failed. If the water pump is making noise, the impeller shaft bearing has worn out, which can sometimes be confirmed by wiggling the water pump drive pulley.
