How to Replace a Water Pump on Subaru Outback?

Drain the cooling system and disconnect the radiator and bypass hoses from the water pump. Remove the cooling fans, drivebelt cover, drivebelts, timing belt, and crankshaft pulley. Remove the timing belt tensioner, idler pulley(s), and on turbo models, the CMP sensor and left side camshaft sprockets. Remove the left side rear timing belt cover and belt tensioner bracket. Loosen the water pump bolts, remove the pump and gasket, and clean the engine mounting surface. Ensure bolt threads and engine holes are corrosion-free. Compare the new and old pump, apply sealant to the new gasket and install it on the pump. Apply RTV sealant to bolt threads, align the pump and gasket on the engine, and tighten the bolts in 1/4-turn increments. Reattach hoses, refill the cooling system, and check drivebelt tension.

The Subaru Outback Water Pump circulates engine coolant through the engine block and radiator to regulate temperature. The Water Pump is located where the lower radiator hose connects and consists of a rotating shaft with bearings, a pulley on one end and an impeller on the other. The belt associated with the crankshaft typically drives the pulley so that the impeller spins and coolant can enter the passages of the block. From here, it proceeds to the thermostat and then to the radiator. Heat is transferred from the coolant to the air here. The shaft is sealed to prevent coolant from leaking to the bearings which reduces wear and tear. Modern-day pumps are almost exclusively aluminum castings, though earlier cast iron versions did exist, but the design remains unchanged. In the Subaru Outback, when the Water Pump fails, it can sometimes leak coolant near the pump itself. If the bearings are worn, the Water Pump may grind or whine. If the impeller is damaged, then the pump won't circulate the fluid, causing overheating. The Water Pump allows every Subaru Outback to maintain a safe operating temperature through regulated coolant flow.
