Where is the Speed Sensor located on manual and automatic transaxles on a Subaru Forester?

The right side of the transaxle is where you will find a VSS in manual transaxles. On automatic ones, there are two speed sensors on the left side of the transaxle; however, you have to drain the transmission fluid, remove the oil pan and remove the valve body to disconnect electrical connectors so we don't suggest doing this at your home. Qualified service technician should only replace speed sensor in an automatic transaxle. Follow this by disconnecting cable from battery's negative terminal. Also firmly place jackstands beneath vehicle then raise it. Disconnect electrical connector from VVS or unscrew VSS from transaxle. Unscrew simply to remove it from transaxle. Installation is reverse for removal.

The Subaru Forester Speed Sensor measures output shaft rotation of the transmission to send a road speed reading to the computer. The Speed Sensor uses a permanent magnet or reed-style pickup that produces electrical signals as the shaft turns. The control module uses these signals to regulate hydraulic pressure, shift timing, shift feel, and torque converter clutch engagement.
