How to remove and install Brake Caliper on a Subaru Impreza?

Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the front or rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Release the parking brake lever if you're working on the rear brakes and remove the disc brake pads. Place a container under the caliper and have some rags handy to catch any spilled brake fluid. On non-Brembo models, clean the caliper lock pin and guide pin, then lubricate the pin with high-temperature grease. On Brembo models, clean the locking clips, pad pins and cross spring. Install the caliper assembly and, if necessary, reconnect the brake line to the caliper using new sealing washers and tighten the banjo bolt and the caliper bolts. Install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts. Finally, bleed the brake system.

Subaru Impreza Brake Caliper

Subaru Impreza Brake Caliper converts hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder into clamping force for pressing brake pads against the brake rotor for slowing down the vehicle. The Brake Caliper operates like a clamp that fits over the rotor and has one or more pistons mounted inside bores sealed by rubber boots. There is also a port for the brake hose and a bleeder screw that removes trapped air. Many original Subaru units use cast iron bodies, while the pistons can be steel or phenolic. The Impreza models are available in two styles. Fixed designs mount rigidly with pistons on both sides of the rotor. Floating designs place the pistons on the inboard side and slide on pins so the body moves to squeeze the rotor. Some rear assemblies consist of a screw device for a parking brake. If the pins or pistons in a Brake Caliper become seized, the caliper may stick, thereby preventing normal release. This means that the brake pads will remain in contact with the rotor. As a result, this will cause overheating, vibration, uneven wear, leaks, or a sinking pedal. When neglected for long, a defective Brake Caliper can warp rotors and make the vehicle pull to one side.
