How to remove and install the transaxle and flywheel/driveplate on Subaru Impreza?

The transaxle is removed. If a manual transmission is used, it is good to take off the clutch disc plus pressure plate. Undo the attaching bolts and then separate flywheel/driveplate from crankshaft. Installation: Apply thread securing compound on bolt threads. On automatic transaxle models, match it with a small hole in the drive plate and line up this with the mark on back plate. Hold flywheel/driveplate in place and attach bolts. Note: There is only one position that flywheel/driveplate can be installed because bolt holes are not equal distance apart. If bolt holes do not align, rotate flywheel/driveplate relative to crankshaft until they are all in exact alignment. With an appropriate tool to prevent turning of it, hold flywheel/driveplate and tighten bolts by crisscross pattern. Install clutch disc plus cover assembly if equipped into place. Reinstall the transaxle.

The Subaru Impreza Flywheel stores rotational energy delivered by the engine, facilitating starting and providing a connection from the crankshaft to the starter and clutch. It also helps engine power deliveries to be smoother. The Flywheel provides a stable surface for the starter and clutch. The disc bolts onto the crankshaft, one of its benefits being that its inertia smoothes out the pulsations resulting from combustion so the wheels receive continuous torque, an effect Subaru owners notice in everyday driving. When you turn the key to the on position, the starter motor engages the ring gear on the Flywheel and spins the crankshaft until the engine starts, at which point the clutch disc engages the Flywheel face. Over the years, every Impreza has utilized two basic styles of Flywheel, solid one-piece and dual mass which separates the disc into primary and secondary sections with a spring-loaded damper between them. The solid design is robust and can often be resurfaced if its friction face develops grooves or hot spots. The dual mass can greatly reduce vibration but cannot usually be machined and may fail if its internal springs wear, needing a complete Flywheel replacement. The ring gear is changed due to excessive wear, warpage, and damage to the teeth; here, replacement is done to enable crisp shifting and quiet starts in Subaru Impreza models.
