Subaru Impreza Wheel Cylinder

The Subaru Impreza Wheel Cylinder utilizes hydraulic pressure to push the brake shoes against the drum using a piston. The Wheel Cylinder body mounted to the backing plate is made of cast iron or aluminum. The bore in the Wheel Cylinder contains two pistons, cup seals, an expander spring, and dust boots. These dust boots protect inner surfaces from dirt and debris. The very middle of the bore is where the brake fluid enters. When the pedal is pressed, that pressure causes the pistons to push so the shoes touch the drum. Meanwhile, the lips of the seals get bigger against the bore so the fluid does not leak. When pressure is released, a return spring pulls back the shoes and pistons, and the expander spring keeps the seals seated. The pistons of the Wheel Cylinder may push directly on the shoes, or short links may be applied, as is common with Subaru Impreza drum brake assemblies. Every Subaru Impreza's brakes feature a bleeder screw at the point, which purges trapped air. The bore can be corroded and may leak or seize due to moisture. The Wheel Cylinder must be checked and rebuilt or replaced. A periodic check-up will keep the Wheel Cylinder on your Subaru Impreza in good shape.

Subaru Impreza Wheel Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to Remove and Install a Wheel Cylinder on Subaru Impreza?
    Posted by Nicholas H.
    A:
To replace the wheel cylinder, remove the brake drum, the brake line fitting, and the two-wheel cylinder-to-brake backing plate nuts. Next, plug the end of the brake line to prevent the loss of brake fluid and the entry of dirt. For installation, properly mount the wheel cylinder, connect the brake line, and tighten the line fitting securely.
