    How to Remove and Replace an A/C Compressor on Subaru Legacy?

    Have a technician discharge and recover the refrigerant. Disconnect the battery, remove the A/C compressor drivebelt, and the electrical harness from the alternator for older models, or the alternator for newer models. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the compressor and plug the fittings. Disconnect the A/C compressor clutch electrical connector, remove the compressor mounting bolts and the compressor. If installing a new compressor, drain excess oil and possibly transfer the clutch from the old unit. Reinstall in reverse order, using new O-rings coated with refrigerant oil. Tighten bolts and fittings to torque. Use A/C-specific O-rings. Reconnect the battery and have a technician evacuate, recharge, and test the system.
