The Subaru Legacy Brake Proportioning Valve prevents skidding by limiting pressure to the rear drums during rapid stops. This enables the front discs to take on the heavier load of the sedan. The rear wheels would lock up first if the Brake Proportioning Valve is not present. Located close to the master cylinder, the Brake Proportioning Valve detects an increase in hydraulic pressure. This increase pushes a spring and piston in the valve, shutting off the rear circuit. Because of this, the weight transfer does not lock the rear wheels. Over its production run, Subaru installed mainly a fixed Brake Proportioning Valve on stock Legacy trims, which delivers predictable factory balance. Performance editions sometimes applied an adjustable style that adds a small knob that lets drivers fine-tune the rear line pressure for unique tire or cargo setups. Moreover, various rally-inspired variants experimented with a lever type that changes bias through a simple arm. Each of the three variants aims for the same thing, but they differ in splitting point ease of adjustment. - Q:How to Replace the Brake Proportioning Valve on a Subaru Legacy?Posted by Idan K.A:The 2005 and later Legacy models are not equipped with a Brake Proportioning Valve. To replace the Brake Proportioning Valve, unscrew all four brake line tube nuts with a flare nut wrench. Carefully unscrew all line fittings with a flare-nut wrench and remove the mounting bracket bolt from the strut tower. Then, remove the mounting bolt for the Brake Proportioning Valve. Installation is the reverse of removal. Bleed the brake system and test the brakes carefully before placing the vehicle into normal operation.Answered by Subaru Parts Specialist Gary / May 21, 2025
