Subaru Legacy Diverter Valve

Subaru Legacy Diverter Valve redirects the pressurized flow to the intake whenever the operating condition changes to protect performance and emissions components. The Diverter Valve in the secondary air injection system directs the output of the air pump harmlessly away from the exhaust during deceleration so that damaging backfires cannot occur. During cold starting, it will direct air to the exhaust ports, and once warm, it will divert air to the catalytic converter to speed sensor readiness and reduce hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide. Turbocharged editions of the Subaru Legacy are fitted with a Diverter Valve. The task of the Diverter Valve is to capture leftover boost when the throttle snaps shut. The Diverter Valve captures the leftover boost and feeds it back to the compressor inlet. As a result, the turbo continues to spin and reverse flow from the engine is prevented. A blow-off valve does a similar job; however, it vents to open air. As such, the Subaru configuration maintains stable air-fuel ratios and quieter operation which promotes fuel economy. Each modern Legacy model has a vacuum actuated Diverter Valve. While the installation location varies depending upon the plumbing of emissions versus turbo, the purpose remains the same. Rapid bypassing occurs on all Subarus.

Subaru Legacy Diverter Valve Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to Remove the Diverter Valve on a Subaru Legacy?
    Posted by Billy C.
    A:
On 2006 and later Forester models, first remove the air bypass valve mounting bolts, lift the valve, disconnect the vacuum hose and inlet duct, and then remove the valve. For 2005 and later Legacy and Outback models, disconnect the vacuum hose and air bypass hose, remove the valve's mounting bolts, and then the valve. Installation is the reverse of removal.
