Subaru Legacy Flywheel

The Subaru Legacy Flywheel is a little powerhouse that smooths out engine power, allows the starter to turn the motor, and provides a friction surface for the clutch. The heavy mass of a Flywheel works to store rotational energy by bolting to the crankshaft with the ability to even out the pulsing of combustion. The ring gear mounted on the Flywheel meshes with the gear on the starter motor to spin the crank for an easy start. When running, the clutch disc is pinched against the Flywheel face along with the pressure plate to allow torque transfer and gear changes on Subaru's drivetrain. Throughout history, Legacy models have applied two major designs. The first is the traditional solid Flywheel. The second is a dual mass design that sandwiches springs between two plates to absorb vibration and quiet shifts. The dual mass unit does ride with more comfort, but it cannot be resurfaced. The internal damper failing is also a possibility. On the other hand, the simpler solid Flywheel can normally be machined as long as it is still within tolerance limits. Or, as usually subjected to wear like scorching, cracks, or broken teeth, having the ring gear replaced is also possible. By paying attention to the feel of the clutch, any noise it might make when starting, and any vibration noted, a Subaru owner gets some clues about when their Legacy needs to be replaced before any damage spreads.

Subaru Legacy Flywheel Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
How to the removal and installation of the transaxle and flywheel/drive plate on Subaru Legacy?
    Posted by Patrick J.
    A:
To remove the trans axle, first detach it from the vehicle. If the vehicle has a manual trans axle, also take out the clutch disc and pressure plate. Next, remove the attaching bolts to separate the flywheel/drive plate from the crankshaft. For installation, apply thread locking compound to the bolt threads. On automatic trans axle models, align the small hole in the drive plate with the mark on the back plate, hold the flywheel/drive plate in position, and install the bolts. The flywheel/drive plate can only be installed in one position due to unevenly spaced bolt holes; if they do not align, rotate the flywheel/drive plate until they do. Use an appropriate tool to hold the flywheel/drive plate in place while tightening the bolts in a crisscross pattern to the specified torque. If equipped, install the clutch disc and clutch cover assembly. Finally, reinstall the trans axle.
