Where is the Idle Control Valve Located and How is it Removed on a Subaru Legacy?

Idle Control Valves on the throttle body were fitted to MY 2000 and 2001 Legacy and Outback models with manual transaxle. Before removing it, you need to disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, detach the electrical connector from the Idle Control Valve, remove the air bypass hose from the Idle Control Valve, and take off the mounting screws of the Idle Control Valve along side the valve itself. The installation is done by reversing the order of removal. On all other MY 2000 through MY 2004 models (except MY 2004 turbocharged models), also Idle Control Valves are located on throttle bodies. Disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal, detaching the electrical connector of the Idle Control Valve, taking off the mounting screws of the Idle Control Valve as well as the Idle Control Valve itself facilitate its removal. Then install this device in reverse procedure used for its removal. In case of MY 2004 turbocharged models and all MY 2005-onward releases have been provided with an electronic control throttle system while their electronic throttle bodies lack an idle control (IAC) motor which instead is internal to the PCM that manipulates throttle plate angle as required by inputs coming from a number of sensors providing informative data.

Subaru Legacy Idle Control Valve

Subaru Legacy Idle Control Valve stabilizes the engine idle by allowing the correct amount of air to bypass the throttle when the driver is off the gas. This unit works in conjunction with the ECU. Using an electrically driven plunger, it opens or closes an air bypass channel to fine-tune idle speed. As a result, the engine neither hunts nor stalls when the vehicle is stopped at the lights. Inside the unit, a small DC motor rotates a lead screw which slides the plunger while a digital encoder tracks the movement. This allows the Idle Control Valve to make small changes in airflow to maintain steady rpm, even when adding electrical load or during steering. For the various generations of Subaru Legacy produced, both the earlier and later Idle Control Valves have a set of similarities and differences. In one style, the Idle Control Valve routes air around a closed throttle plate while in the alternate style it nudges the throttle butterfly itself.
