Subaru Legacy Knock Sensor

The Knock Sensor of a Subaru Legacy detects abnormal combustion in the cylinders. It signals the engine control unit to keep the ignition timing within safe limits to prevent damage. The engine has a Knock Sensor fixed to its block that has a piezoelectric element which converts the vibrations caused by pressure spikes into an electrical signal. When the signal is received, the computer will retard the timing incrementally until knock ceases. Then the computer carefully advances the timing so it remains just below the optimal knock threshold. This consistent feedback from the Knock Sensor allows the Subaru powertrain to ensure performance continuity. It is the support of the Legacy for fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. This is despite changes in fuel grade, temperature, or altitude. To prevent damage to the pistons, bearings, and other internal parts, it curtails any prolonged detonation. The function of the Knock Sensor gives the engine control unit information on the operation of the engine which will direct timing for each cylinder. As a result, each Subaru Legacy cylinder will fire and operate smoothly under all driving conditions. In the event of a component failure, the control unit may trigger a dashboard warning light and restrict engine output momentarily. The engine will continue to run until the Subaru system begins receiving accurate Knock Sensor information again. After this, the Legacy will revert to normal operation.

Subaru Legacy Knock Sensor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q:
Where is the knock sensor located and how do you remove and install it on Subaru Legacy?
    Posted by Ariane R.
    A:
The knock sensor is situated below the intake manifold, upon the top of the engine block, to one side of the centre line of casings and near its rear end. For removal of the knock sensor, first take off the engine cover and disconnect a wire from its negative terminal. As for turbocharged models, remove them also from intercooler connections. For knocking sensor electrical connector disconnection push release tab and separate these two halves. See how it is placed before taking off and make a marking on an engine block where this pigtail is found. Take out this knock sensor retaining bolt then pull out this knock sensor. To fit in a new knock sensor reverse back with previous steps ensuring that tightening torque amount is recommended by manufacturer for particular vehicle model.
