How to Replace the Fuel Level Sensor in a Subaru Outback?

Relieve the fuel system pressure, disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, remove the rear seat and the rear floormat, remove the left (driver's side) plate screws and plate from the body floor pan, disconnect the electrical connector from the Fuel Level Sensor, disconnect the fuel supply and return hose quick-connect fittings, remove the sub-compartment Fuel Level Sensor mounting nuts, lift the unit out of the fuel tank angling the Fuel Level Sensor as necessary to protect the float arm from damage, remove the old gasket and inspect it for cracks, tears and deterioration, and replace it if necessary. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Subaru Outback Fuel Level Sensor

The Subaru Outback Fuel Level Sensor is designed to provide drivers with a clear and timely indication of how much gas is left in the tank in order to avoid surprise empty tank scenarios. The Fuel Level Sensor is inside the tank and includes a buoyant float and an actuating rod along with a variable resistor. Whenever the float rises up and down with the fuel, the resistor alters the electrical signal sent to the dash gauge. Earlier Subaru models utilized the same float-resistor principle. However, recent Subaru models have modified the electronics of the Fuel Level Sensor to give faster readings, tolerate higher temperatures, and consume less power while remaining easy to calibrate.
