Q: How to Remove and Install the TR Sensor on a Subaru Outback?A: Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, put the shift lever in Neutral, raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, remove the center exhaust pipe section and on later models the front part of the exhaust system, disconnect the electrical connector from the TR sensor, disconnect the shift cable from the manual lever and from the transaxle, remove the TR sensor mounting bolts, shift the manual lever to the Park position and remove the TR sensor, drive out the roll pin from the end of the shift shaft, slide the shift arm off of the shaft, slide the sensor off of the shaft, place the sensor in position and loosely install the TR sensor bolts, insert a 5/32-inch drill bit through the alignment holes in the ends of the manual and sensor levers, and into the alignment hole in the sensor body, and tighten the sensor bolts securely. Installation is the reverse of removal.
