Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal, remove the engine cover (2005 and later Legacy and Outback models and 2006 Forester models), inter-cooler (2005 and later Legacy and Outback models), front exhaust pipe, turbocharger joint pipe from the turbocharger (remove three fasteners), coolant return hose from the metal coolant line, turbocharger to the intake duct, bolt that secures the oil inlet line mounting bracket to the turbocharger, banjo bolts at both ends of the oil inlet line, coolant hose, right turbocharger mounting bracket, oil outlet hose from the underside of the turbocharger, turbocharger, strip off all the remaining parts and install them on the new turbocharger unit, use new sealing washers for the oil inlet pipe banjo fittings and, if removed, for the coolant pipe banjo fittings, tighten the oil inlet pipe banjo bolts and, if removed, the coolant pipe banjo bolts to the torque, use a new gasket and nuts when reconnecting the joint pipe to the turbocharger, apply anti-seize compound to the mounting studs and tighten the joint pipe nuts to the torque, refill the engine coolant and oil, start the engine and check for coolant, oil and exhaust leaks.

The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) and various sensors control the turbocharger system.
