How to Remove and Install a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) on a Transaxle on Subaru Impreza?

Disconnect the battery's negative terminal, raise the vehicle, and disconnect the VSS electrical connector. Remove the VSS, air filter housing or air intake duct, intercooler, and upper engine mount. Disconnect the transaxle harness, drain the fluid, and remove the exhaust system. Remove the heat shield, driveshaft, and crossmember. Disconnect fluid lines, remove front VSS and torque converter turbine speed sensor. Remove the transaxle fluid pan and disconnect the rear VSS electrical connector. Follow the VSS wiring harness into the transaxle and disconnect the connectors. Remove the ground wire and push the harness through the case. Disconnect the rear VSS connector and remove the sensor. Installation is the reverse of removal. Ensure the harness grommet seats properly, clean the mating surfaces, apply RTV sealant to the pan flange, and tighten all bolts.

The Subaru Impreza Speed Sensor converts rotation at the transmission output shaft into an electronic signal that indicates vehicle speed and sends this information to the powertrain control module. The function of the Speed Sensor is similar to that of a magnetic pickup placed beside a reluctor wheel. As the teeth pass by the magnetic pickup, a change in the magnetic field occurs. The result of the change in the magnetic field creates a voltage pulse. The computer interprets this pulse to work out road speed. Through monitoring of the signal, line pressure, shift timing, shift feel, and torque converter clutch engagement are all managed by the module in the automatic transmission as it operates in steady state at different throttle positions and loads. If the signal from the Speed Sensor is missing or erratic, the transmission may delay the upshifts and engage harshly and may fail to lock the torque converter. This will affect the drivability of any Subaru Impreza equipped with an electronically controlled automatic gearbox.
