- Q:How to check crankshaft endplay and remove the crankshaft and main bearings from the crankcase on Subaru Outback?Posted by Gage W.A:Take apart the crankcase then remove the rear oil seal of the crankshaft. Prior to removing the connecting rod/crankshaft assembly, examine for end play of the crankshaft. Gently wedge or shove the crankshaft towards rear. Put feeler gauges between thrust surface of center main bearing and crankshaft then determine its clearance which is equal to end play. Typically, end play on a crankshaft falls within 0.003-0.010" (0.076-0.254 mm) If higher than that, inspect wear on thrust surfaces of the crankshaft after it has been disassembled. New main bearings should correct this if no wear is evident. NB: The 2008 and subsequent models have their thrust bearing at #5 or rear bearing position carefully lift out crankshaft and store in a safe place where it cannot fall down or be damaged .
