Where is the Speed Sensor Located on Manual and Automatic Transaxles on Subaru Legacy?

The right side of the transaxle is where you will find a VSS in manual transaxles. On automatic ones, there are two speed sensors on the left side of the transaxle; however, you have to drain the transmission fluid, remove the oil pan and remove the valve body to disconnect electrical connectors so we don't suggest doing this at your home. Qualified service technician should only replace speed sensor in an automatic transaxle. Follow this by disconnecting cable from battery's negative terminal. Also firmly place jackstands beneath vehicle then raise it. Disconnect electrical connector from VVS or unscrew VSS from transaxle. Unscrew simply to remove it from transaxle. Installation is reverse for removal.

Subaru Legacy Speed Sensor

The Subaru Legacy Speed Sensor measures the rotation of the transmission output shaft and transmits the data of the vehicle speed to the control computer. The sensor consists of a permanent magnet or reed on the transmission which generates an electric signal at the speed of the shaft. This signal enables the computer to adjust line pressure, select shift points and regulate the torque converter clutch engagement to achieve the correct shift feel. In case of a failure of the Speed Sensor, the system is able to provide harsh shifts delayed upshifts or loss of torque converter lockup. The Speed Sensor is fitted in all Subaru Legacies that have electronic automatic control wherein throttle position and fluid temperature are applied as inputs to ensure that gear changes remain smooth. The fact that the Speed Sensor counts rotations rather than mechanical cables it provides constant data to Subaru drives and minimizes wear.
