How to Remove the Intercooler on a Subaru Legacy?

To remove the intercooler on 2004 and later Legacy, Outback, and Forester models, disconnect the PCV hoses and metal lines, the turbocharger inlet duct, and the vacuum hose from the air bypass valve. Remove the intercooler mounting bolts and loosen the hose clamps securing the ducts. Lift the intercooler and unplug the turbocharger and ducts and remove it. To reinstall, switch the removal steps going from the final step to the first step.

Subaru Legacy Intercooler

The Intercooler from a Subaru Legacy lowers the temperature of the compressed intake charge that goes into the engine. As a result, the air the engine gulps is denser and will allow for more power without knocking from engine detonation. The Intercooler sits between the compressor and the intake manifold, stripping away heat. As the turbo spools and squeezes air, that air heats up, but the Intercooler drops the charge temperature and hence prevents pre-ignition. Pre-ignition robs horsepower. The early turbo models of the Legacy utilized a simple air-to-air Intercooler to cool the hot charge before it entered the engine. This system applied finned aluminum cores which were washed by ambient airflow. This design is quite light and does not add much weight. In later editions of the Legacy GT, a more compact top-mounted air-to-air unit with improved fin density was employed, drawing ambient breezes through a hood scoop as before. The higher-output track-focused variants have combined the same engine with a stout air-to-liquid Intercooler which uses a separate radiator to circulate coolant for steadier temps during repeated boosts.
